If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!

I was looking through my Facebook photos for ‘makeup mistakes’ the kind of photos that would make me shudder. I was hoping to find over-blushed, wonky eyeliner, wrong colour matches kind of photos. But none. Not a single photo of me would class as a makeup mistake. In fact in most I wished I was wearing more makeup. It’s a strange thing to think back on. I never thought about it when I was younger, but I’ve always kept it minimal and simple.

I personally don’t like standing out, so I'm not surprised that I didn't experiment much when I was younger. And whilst I didn't find the talking point I had hoped for I did stumble upon something better. Because if it ain't broke don't fix it!

My daily makeup routine has only slightly changed in the past five years or so. I’ve discovered bronzer, I experiment a lot more with brighter lipsticks and every now and again I’ll opt for a smokey eye. But I’m really happy with my daily set up.

I am a light base girl. Actually one of my first luxury foundations was the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua*, I’m wearing it in quite a few of these photos. And it wasn’t until I started going clubbing and drinking more alcohol that I even bothered with concealer. I had great skin until I hit my 20’s. Even today Vitalumiere remains a staple in my collection and heavy duty bases are few and far between.

Filling in your brows was unheard of when I was growing up. But clear mascara was my brow saviour! My hairs are quite long so they need some serious taming. I either used the Miss Sporty Clear Mascara* or the Natural Collection Lash Care Mascara*. The shape hasn’t changed and to be honest I’ve never said to myself ‘I would like these eyebrows’ because I have my own eyebrows so why not rock them?

Actually I’m still a massive fan of Natural Collection. The brand is limited and it hasn’t changed much over the years but neither have I. The shades are all totally wearable and the eye shadows are nice to use especially for the price.

Looking back I can see that winged liner was a rare occasion, it still is now. And I know exactly why. I am terrible at getting ready, I have music playing, I’m dancing around and changing my outfit about 20 times. I remember taking an eyeliner out with me because I didn’t have time and I ended up attempting it in a taxi. It wasn’t terrible but I never did it again.

When it comes to eyeshadow I’ve gotten a bit braver. I used to stick to pale shimmery shades but now I don’t mind experimenting with copper tones or something a bit darker like plums or dark reds. At the moment I've been using the Urban Decay Half Baked over the lid and a matte light brown through the crease. Loving it!

I can put my hand up and admit that bright lips scare me. It’s the opposite of comfortable for me, and the fact that I even have bright shades in my collection is an accomplishment. I love Burberry’s Russian Red* and have just added a couple of bright pink shades to my rotation. Natural-looking shades have always been my go to and they always will be. But I’m happy that every now and again I can whip out the lip liner and sport a darker lip.

I hope that this post isn’t too much of a ramble. I think it’s a good idea to look back on yourself, it helps you to appreciate who you have become. And as much as I love experimenting with makeup I will always stick to my daily routine. It’s been tried and tested, it’s full proof and it’s totally me.

Have you had any makeup mistakes? Has your daily routine changed much over the years?
